Marathon du Mont-Blanc
The Mont Blanc Marathon is an international sporting event organized by the Club des Sports de Chamonixa non-profit association founded in 1905. Over 3 days, eight running competitions are organized around Chamonix, in the Mont Blanc massif.
Organised since 1979 by the Club des Sports de Chamonix (a non-profit-making association), the Mont Blanc Marathon brings together 10,000 runners and 30,000 accompanying adults every year to take part in the 8 trail races held in the Chamonix Valley at the end of June. From the 90km du Mont-Blanc to the legendary 42km, there are also races for young people (The Young Race) and children (free mini cross), as well as a 23km, a 10km, the KMV and the Duo étoilé (a race for teams of 2).
The event is so popular that it is no longer possible to accommodate all the runners who want to take part in the races. The number of places has been limited for more than 10 years, and to register you have to take part in a draw that attracts more than 33,000 applicants every autumn.
However, since the creation of the event, the Chamonix Sports Club has always taken care, through the actions undertaken to structure itself, to play a role in the development of the sport while preserving the environment in which the races take place.
The organisation is working on several fronts to reduce its carbon footprint: all plastic bottles of still and sparkling water have been eliminated, a zero waste policy is being implemented, the trails are cleaned before and after the races, and a free transport plan for runners and accompanying persons is in place during the event in the valley.
In addition to these measures, the Chamonix Sports Club took a strong and unique decision in the autumn to reduce the carbon footprint associated with transporting participants, by reserving 40% of race numbers for runners who commit to coming to Chamonix by bus or train. Over all the races, this corresponds to 4,000 race numbers.
It's a revolution. It's not being done anywhere else, and the Mont Blanc Marathon, which has always been a driving force in its approach to sport, wants to retain this pioneering spirit that is also unique to the Chamonix valley.
